MayFest 2010

On Wednesday 5th May I attended the MayFest 2010 at the University of East London. From 12pm-7pm the UEL campus was host to all kinds of events ranging from market stalls, dance, sport, drama and musical performances. The MayFest is a once a year event which relies on the contribution of UEL students and members of the local community.

West Ham boxing club along with their UEL student members set up a mini boxing ring on campus to showcase their sparring talents to the public. At the Blendavenda stall, participants were encouraged produce environmentally friendly smoothies by riding a bicycle which powered an electric blender stuffed full of healthy fruit. Bonita Charles set up a stall with a PA system and a laptop designed to help anybody who needed help! There were many other contributions to the day which were also interesting.

The atmosphere at the MayFest was vibrant and friendly. There was so much activity indoors and outside. Their was enough information available to engage with and learn from.

The majority of my time at the MayFest was spent covering an amazing slot in the University of East London’s West building. The Singer/Songwriter Showcase in Oscars was the highlight of the event in my opinion. With performances from third year undergraduate students Claire O’Dwyer & The Motown Sisters, Marc and Phoebe Osborne.

The showcase was brilliant! I enjoyed the performances. Claire took the audience back to the early days of soul with support from The Motown Sisters. ‘Aint’ No Mountain High Enough‘ and ‘Valerie‘ were stand out tracks from Claire who sang and danced her way throughout her set leaving the audience yearning for more vocals and choreography by the end of her show.

Marc along with his electric guitar strummed the heart strings of every audience member with his instrumental performance which spoke many words through each note he played. Marc finished with an improvisational freestyle which was fused together by his Irish culture and other musical influences in his life.

Phoebe’s performance was outstanding as she sang with her piano and support from cello player Luca Nasciuti. The audience enjoyed listening to the melodies and lyrical content produced by Phoebe. Her vocals empathised her experiences in a haunting yet soothing manner.

In my coverage of the Showcase I managed to film and interview each act. I will be posting the interviews on my blog asap and will keep you updated with any future showcases or concerts of each performer.
